At Coassemble, we prioritize making our platform as accessible as possible, working alongside a leading accessibility testing organization to ensure our core features align with accessibility standards. Our platform provides the tools and features needed to create accessible content, but compliance often depends on how you use these tools while building your courses. We've summarized a lot of the key factors that come into play, and things you need to consider for accessibility in regards to course creation below.


# **Alternative text for images**

Alternative text, often referred to as 'Alt text', is used to provide a textual alternative to an image. This allows screen readers to read the description of images to visually impaired learners.

## How do you add alternative text in Coassemble?

### **Adding Alt text on a screen**

To add Alt text to an image within a screen:


1. Click the **Edit image** button.
2. Select the **Alt** option to open the text input field.
3. Enter your Alt text and click **Save**.


### Adding Alt text in the image library

You also have the option to add default Alt text to any images in your Image library. This means if you are reusing images from your Image library across multiple screens or courses, you don’t need to manually add the Alt text every time you include the image.

To add Alt text in the image library:


1. Navigate to 'Course settings' from within a course.
2. Select 'Image library'
3. Hover over an image and select the three dots in the top right corner. Then, select 'Edit'
4. Add your Alt text and select 'Save changes'


### How to write effective Alt text

Good Alt text should be clear, concise, and descriptive, ensuring that users who rely on screen readers can understand the essential content and purpose of an image. Start by identifying the key information the image conveys—whether it's an object, action, emotion, or data visualization. Avoid generic phrases like "image of" or "picture of," and instead focus on meaningful details that provide context. Keep it brief—typically under 125 characters—while still capturing the most important aspects. If the image contains text, include it in the Alt text unless it’s already conveyed elsewhere. Finally, consider the image’s function: if it serves a decorative role without adding essential information, it may not need Alt text at all.


# High contrast matters

When selecting your course theme, it’s important to consider color contrast—especially for buttons, backgrounds, and any manually adjusted text colors. All of Coassemble’s theme presets meet the necessary contrast requirements outlined below, but if you override them, be sure to check your contrast settings.

To meet WCAG level AA, you are required to achieve a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. There are a number of tools you can use to check the correct contrast of your foreground (font) color, and background color. # Choosing accessible screens

All of Coassemble’s screen types are compatible with screen readers, making them accessible to visually impaired users. However, you may choose to avoid using the **Hotspot** screen, as it places labels over an image, which may not be as well interpreted by screen readers or create the most optimum experience for your specific cohort of learners. The Embed screen allows for third-party tools to be embedded, so it is important to check the accessibility of those tools and how they behave with screenreaders before opting to include them.

Creating accessible courses is a team effort between Coassemble and you, the course creator! While we provide the tools and features to support accessibility, it’s the choices you make—like adding alt text for images, including captions on videos, and organizing content clearly—that really have an impact. By following a few best practices, you’ll help make sure your courses are inclusive for your audience.


**Video content:** Ensure that all videos have accurate captions or subtitles. Consider including transcripts for added accessibility.


**Images:** Use descriptive and relevant alt text for all images. This ensures screen readers can convey the visual content to users with visual impairments. If an image is decorative, do not include alt text.


**Text layout:** Structure your content with clear headings, lists, and sections. This makes navigation easier and helps screen readers process information in a logical flow.


**Color and contrast:** Choose colors and contrast levels that meet accessibility guidelines. Avoid relying solely on color to convey meaning, as this can create barriers for some users.


**Emojis:** Avoid the use of emojis as it can be distracting and can also disruptive when content is being read aloud by a screen reader.
