Articulate is one of the most widely used tools for building online courses in organisations, particularly among learning and development (L&D) teams. Coassemble is designed to make course creation accessible to a broader set of subject matter experts and distributed teams, with a streamlined authoring experience and AI-assisted workflows.

Learning curve
- Articulate: Designed for instructional designers. Storyline in particular has a steep learning curve, requiring significant training to master. While Rise is simpler, it is still less intuitive for non-L&D professionals.
- Coassemble: Built for anyone with knowledge to share, regardless of L&D background. Course creation runs as a conversation with an AI agent: bring a document or describe what you need, answer a few questions, and a structured course is built with you. Every screen starts from a layout, which gives an author a pre-arranged set of blocks on a six column grid rather than an empty canvas. That is what lets a non-designer produce something that looks designed, and the layout can be swapped afterwards.
Speed of authoring
- Articulate: Powerful, but slow. Building advanced Storyline courses requires hours (or days) of work, including complex slide interactions, triggers, and design decisions.
- Coassemble: Optimised for speed to publish. A course is drafted from a prompt or a source document in minutes, and the agent stays in the builder afterwards, so changes are described rather than clicked through.
Existing Articulate content
This is often the real blocker in a deal, and it no longer has to be.
- Host it as it is. Upload a SCORM package from Rise or Storyline and it runs exactly as authored, with the original design and interactions intact, reported on alongside every other course. It isn't editable, which suits approved compliance content.
- Convert it into an editable course. Upload the same package to the AI agent and it becomes a fully editable Coassemble course made of blocks. Text, images, galleries, flashcards, process steps, accordions, and knowledge checks carry across, and anything that couldn't be converted is listed for review.
Rise and Storyline are both recognised specifically, so they convert more reliably than a generic package. Adobe Captivate and iSpring are recognised too. Labelled graphics and hotspot interactions aren't rebuilt by the conversion, and the original visual design doesn't carry across, so host rather than convert when the look has to survive.
Hosted packages are not a reporting dead end. You get attempt-level tracking, time spent, success and score, a side-by-side comparison across attempts, the ability to grant an extra attempt, and a question-level CSV export, which is usually more than the customer had in their old LMS.
Flexibility & format
- Articulate: Offers highly detailed control of slides, branching, and interactivity. However, outputs are tied to SCORM/xAPI packages or Articulate's Rise hosting, meaning delivery usually depends on an LMS.
- Coassemble: Emphasises flexible, modular content that can be deployed in multiple contexts. As an Embed solution, content isn't tied to a single format or system. Coassemble reads SCORM in and exports SCORM out, so an existing library isn't a reason to stay where it is, and moving to Coassemble doesn't create a new lock-in.
Collaboration
- Articulate: Collaboration is possible (via Rise or Review 360), but workflows are still geared toward specialist authors, not cross-functional teams, as per-seat pricing is so high.
- Coassemble: Designed for distributed teams. Multiple authors, even non-specialists, can contribute to content creation without bottlenecks.
AI capabilities
- Articulate: AI tools remain secondary to manual authoring as it's primarily designed for L&D users.
- Coassemble: AI is core to the authoring experience. Courses are created through an agent that also edits, restructures and rewrites on request, generates quizzes, narration and images, and reads course analytics to answer questions about where learners are struggling. The agent panel carries a Review tab, which is the course review known as Course Coach, and an Insights tab that reads learner data once people have been through a course.
The agent, Review and Insights are available on all current plans, but not on the legacy Flow and Hub plans.
The differentiator worth leading with
Articulate has no equivalent of driving the authoring tool from another product. Coassemble exposes the course lifecycle as tools your own application can call over MCP or REST, so a partner can offer AI course building inside their own product rather than sending users to a separate authoring tool at all. Tokens can be pinned to a single course, restricted to an allowlist of tools, or made read-only, so the capability can be handed to end customers safely.
For a prospect who already has an authoring tool, this is usually the point that changes the conversation, because it is not a better version of what Articulate does. It is a different shape.
Quality control
- Articulate: Quality depends on the skill of the instructional designer building the course. There's no built-in review of the instructional design itself.
- Coassemble: The Review tab gives non-specialists a review they'd otherwise need an instructional designer for, catching things like a question that assesses material the course never taught, missing alt text, or a quiz where the correct answer sits in the same position every time.
