## Before you start

A few things to have in place first:

* Your course has been translated into the language you want to narrate. Translation can take a while, since it works through every screen and every piece of content, so let that finish before you move on.

* Narration is turned on for the course. If it isn't, you'll turn it on as part of the publish flow described below.

* You've reviewed the translated text. Narrations are generated from the script in each language, so anything you fix after generating will need a fresh publish.

## Step 1: Finish working on the translation

Make any edits you need to the translated screens or the narration script for the translation before you generate. If you're still tweaking the wording, hold off on publishing. Generating narrations costs tokens, so it's worth getting the script right first.

When you're done editing, click **Done** at the top of the translation editor.

## Step 2: Click Publish

From your course, click **Publish**. The publish panel opens and shows you what's about to happen, including:

* The number of changes since your last publish.

* Whether **Generate narrations** is turned on, and the number of screens it applies to.

* Your narration usage for the month and an estimate of the tokens this publish will use.

If **Generate narrations** is switched off and you want narrations, turn it on here.

## Step 3: Tick "Include translations"

In the publish panel, you'll see an **Include translations** checkbox under the narration settings. Tick it. This is what tells Coassemble to generate narrations for your translated versions, not just the original language.

If you leave it unticked, only the original language will be narrated, and your translation will publish without audio.

## Step 4: Generate narrations and publish

Click **Generate narrations and publish**. The panel will show progress for each language as it works through them, for example "English Complete" and then "French (France) 0 of 3" ticking up as those narrations are generated.

This can take a few minutes depending on how many screens you have and how many languages you're publishing. Leave the panel open until it finishes.

## Editing a translation or narration script after generating

If you spot a typo or want to rework a translated screen after narrations have been generated, you can. Make your edits, click **Done**, then publish again with **Include translations** ticked. The narration for any changed screens will regenerate, and your token usage will reflect that.

If you only need to change the narration script (not the visible text), open the narration script for that screen in the translation, edit it, and publish.

## What it costs

Narrations use tokens from your monthly narration allowance. The publish panel shows two things to help you decide before you generate:

* **Usage this month**: how much of your allowance you've already used.

* **Estimated tokens for this publish**: how much this publish will use, based on the script length across all languages you're including.

Translations add to the token count because each language is narrated separately. A course with one translation generally uses about twice the tokens of the same course narrated in one language.

## Common questions

### Can I narrate a translation without re-narrating the original?

The publish flow narrates whichever scripts have changed since the last publish. If you've only edited the translation, only the translation's narrations will be generated. The original language won't be re-narrated unless its script has changed.

### What happens if I publish without ticking "Include translations"?

Your translation will publish, but without narration. Learners viewing that language will see the translated text but won't hear audio. You can publish again later with the box ticked to add narration in.

### Can I edit a generated narration?

You can edit the narration script for any screen, in any language, and then regenerate. If the voice or pronunciation isn't right, adjust the script (for example, by spelling a tricky word phonetically) and publish again.

### What if I run out of tokens partway through?

If your monthly narration allowance isn't enough to cover the publish, the publish panel will flag this before you start. You can either reduce what's being narrated (for example, by unticking **Include translations** and narrating fewer languages this month) or upgrade your plan.

### How long does it take?

It depends on the number of screens and the number of languages. A short course in one language can finish in under a minute. A longer course with several translations can take several minutes. The publish panel shows live progress per language so you can see where it's up to.

### Can I pick a voice for my narration for my translated course?

No, the voice will be automatically selected. You can only pick a voice for the default/primary course, not the translated course.
